Our First Camping Trip

We have been regular visitors to the Indiana Dunes State Park to swim, hike trails and climb the dunes with the kids.  Something the whole family enjoys.  We bought a tent and all the essential camping gear and booked a weekend at Dunewood Campground in the Indiana Dunes National Park.  The kids had a blast!  We were slightly worried about tent camping and sharing restroom and shower space with other campers in the time of Covid, but the campground staff was constantly cleaning the restroom and did a deep cleaning of the showers twice a day.  We were lucky enough to catch open showers right after they had been cleaned.  We walked from the campground to the shores of Lake Michigan to swim.  The road out of the campground goes directly to the beach through the Beverly Shores neighborhood.  It is a long walk, with kids, but there are sidewalks the entire way.  The architecture and landscaping was incredible and we highly recommend this walk, if that sort of thing interests you.

We would highly recommend a stay at this campground either in a tent or small RV.  The camp host had guests who were very noisy and there was a group of college age kids who were up being loud and playing music well past quiet hours.  Luckily, our kids are great sleepers and it didn’t bother them a bit.

We made a stop at the Visitor Center on our way out for the kids to get a stamp in their National Parks Passports.
